Galaxy S III gets 9 million pre-orders from 100 global carriers

May 18th, 2012

Korea Economic Daily is reporting that the Samsung Galaxy S III has received over 9 million pre-orders from 100 carriers around the world. This information comes courtesy of a Samsung official who remains anonymous. Whichever way you look at it, that's an impressive figure. We knew the Galaxy S III was going to sell big but these numbers are much higher than what we would have bet on. It's predecessor, the Galaxy S II, took 10 months to ship 20 million units and the Galaxy S III took two weeks to reach almost half of that. Also, these are pre-order figures, not shipments, and are almost as good as actual sales figures. Looks like Samsung has another winner on their hands. Obviously, this does not bode well for rivals such as HTC and LG. And even though this figure is nowhere close to the iPhone 4S pre-orders, Apple should be feeling the heat as well, especially considering the 9 million figure excludes Apple's key market, the US of A.

Pantech Vega Racer 2 now shipping in South Korea

May 3rd, 2012

Pantech unveiled the Vega Racer 2 last month and now South Koreans will actually be able to see it in flesh. Pantech just announced the device has started making its way from the factories to retailers around the country. The Vega Racer 2 is based on the Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon SoC with a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait processor and Adreno 225 GPU. It has a 4.8-inch 720p display, a 2020mAh battery, LTE connectivity and runs on Android ICS. The Vega Racer 2 supports voice commands (which are supposedly further reaching than the standard Android ones). For example you may take pictures with your voice, explore the gallery, etc. Pantech is shipping the Vega Racer 2 to all three major carriers in South Korea, but we are still to learn if it will ever hit markets outside its homeland.

Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos surfaces, costs €260

February 15th, 2012

Samsung keeps extending its Duos lineup and today we learned the popular Galaxy Ace is the next smartphone to grow an extra radio. The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos went official for the Indian market.

You should keep in mind that the Duos part here doesn’t mean a second SIM slot as it does on most other Samsung devices. Instead, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos will come with GSM and CDMA support, making it a truly global phone. You can still have two subscription plans with this one, but only if your country has both CDMA and GSM carriers.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos will be mostly identical to the original Galaxy Ace, but it will get a larger battery to make up for the second radio. Instead of the 1350 mAh unit found in the original Galaxy Ace, the Galaxy Ace Duos will have a 1650 mAh Li-Ion battery. It’s unclear if the new battery will be compatible with the original smartphone, though.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos will retail for INR16,900, which translates to about €260 or $340. We don’t know if Samsung has any plans of bringing the smartphone to Europe or America, but we should learn more about the company’s plans soon enough

Samsung to replace its Bada platform with Tizen

January 17th, 2012

Samsung has announced its plans to replace its homegrown smartphone platform – Bada – with the Linux-based Tizen, which was recently created in collaboration with Intel.

Launched back in 2010, Bada was meant to feature on Samsung’s low-end touchscreen phones. Compared to the feature phone OS found on these phones, Bada was much better because it had an improved user interface and smartphone features such as proper multitasking and native third party application installation through Samsung’s own application store.

Now, however, with Samsung starting work on Tizen, it makes little sense to keep both the platforms existing simultaneously. Then there is also the fact that Samsung has Android and Windows Phone devices as well.

So starting this year, Bada will be replaced with Tizen and as such, will cease to exist on its own, outside of the devices that are currently running it. Samsung has said that the current Bada applications and the SDK will be backward compatible with the new OS. No mention of whether the current devices will be upgraded to Tizen, although we wouldn’t hold our breath for that.

Samsung has also mentioned that they will be launching one or two Tizen phones this year. Our guess is that they will be low-end or mid-range devices, since Samsung has already got the high-end covered with Android and Windows Phone devices. Hopefully we will find out more at MWC this year.

LG Marquee comes to Boost with no contract

January 14th, 2012

Looks like dad’s letting the kids get more toys this year, as Sprint’s prepaid brand, Boost Mobile, is getting the LG Marquee in the coming weeks.

The LG Optimus Black clone, which was already available from Sprint on a two-year contract, is released under Boost’s “Shrinkage” plan, and is undoubtedly part of the parent company’s effort to generate more interest in the contract-less phone market.

The Boost Mobile version of the LG Marquee will be available for $279 from January 23.

Samsung expects to rob Nokia of top maker title this year

January 11th, 2012

The time of Nokia’s unquestionable reign in the mobile phone market is drawing to a close it seems, as the Finns lost the smartphone shipment race last year. Samsung are reportedly gunning for the top, confident they can outsell Nokia in all categories in 2012.

They’ve beaten their 2010 sales records, moving the impressive 300 million phones in 2011, which seems to set them on the right track. They were on top in terms of smartphone volumes, but still trail Nokia when you consider all phones.

Analysts from Gartner are less certain that the South Koreans can steal the crown, saying that Nokia’s strong position in emerging markets will allow it to maintain its lead. Especially, because the growth of the smartphone market is expected to slow down this year, except in emerging markets where Nokia reigns supreme. This is something Samsung will need to address if they really want the top spot, analysts say.

Reuters is predicting Nokia will sell 388 million phones in 2012, with Samsung following close by with 359 million. Their predictions for 2011 were 418 million and 320 million respectively, so predictions aren’t always exact.

We’ll see how things go. Samsung is pushing forward with Android, Bada and maybe Tizen, while Nokia is making Symbian (now Nokia OS, previously the top OS by market share) play second fiddle to their new love Windows Phone, which both Nokia and Microsoft expect to really pick up this year.

Fujitsu showcases quad-core Tegra 3 smartphone at CES

January 11th, 2012

Unlike what we thought before, Fujitsu didn’t just have the ultra thin Arrows F-078 and the ES IS12F to display at the CES. In fact they had something really special to show, a quad-core Android smartphone running on Ice Cream Sandwich.

The phone currently is just a prototype and the specifications could change before it is announced officially at the MWC this year but it seems mighty impressive as it is. For starters it will run on the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, which will take care of all your gaming needs. Fujitsu demonstrated this power by running Riptide GP on it and the device was able to run the game on its own display as well as an external monitor smoothly. And thanks to the fifth companion core built-in, it will consume less power when you’re not running graphics heavy applications.

The Arrow prototype also had a 4.6-inch HD display and a 13.1 megapixel rear camera capable of ISO 25,600 sensitivity, although it remains to be seen how good the images are at that kind of ISO value. Lastly, the phone will launch with Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

We will find out more about it at MWC along with information regarding which markets it plans to release the phone in. Although Fujitsu does plan to bring the phone to the west it eventually will also depend upon the carriers there.

White Galaxy Nexus image surfaces, not as white as expected

January 7th, 2012

The news that Samsung has almost completed the development of the white Galaxy Nexus broke yesterday, but we only get the first actual photos of the smartphone now.

As it turns out the white Galaxy Nexus won’t be completely repainted (as was our yesterday’s mockup) and its front panel will remain black. The back and the sides is where all the whitening action happened with the camera module ending up silver rather than snow-white.

Leaving the image aside, there’s not much new information about the white version. It’s still expected to come in the first days of February (February 6 is the most frequently mentioned date) and cost as much as its black sibling (which is actually gray if we have to be pedantic).

Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus with 1GHz CPU unveiled

January 4th, 2012

Samsung has just announced the successor of its highly popular Galaxy Ace Android smartphone. The successor of the mid-range device is dubbed Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus and improves several key aspects of its hardware.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus comes with a faster, 1GHz, CPU, 3GB storage and more RAM than its predecessor – 512MB. The Ace Plus also sports a marginally larger HVGA LCD – it measures 3.65″ in diagonal compared to the 3.5″ of the original Galaxy Ace. The exterior of the smartphone also got redesigned and it’s now made of glossy rather than matte plastic.

The rest of the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus hardware is pretty much on par with the firs Galaxy Ace. You get a 5 megapixe autofocus camera with LED flash, dual-band 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack and a standard microUSB port.

The internal storage is expandable through the microSD card slot, while the Bluetooth version is 3.0.

Unfortunately, there’s no information about the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus pricing and availability at this stage.

Samsung drops plans to release Value Pack for Galaxy S

January 4th, 2012

Galaxy S users waiting for the Value Pack from Samsung are in for a disappointment. A company spokesperson has just confirmed that Samsung has dropped the plans to release the update.

As you may know, Samsung initially declined upgrading the popular Galaxy S smartphone to ICS last year, stating the lack of space on the phone as the reason. Later on they said that they will look into it, only to come back a while later and say that it’s not going to happen after all. They did, however, promise a “Value Pack”, which was supposed to add some useful features to the Galaxy S, found in ICS.

But now, even that’s not going to happen. Once again, Samsung claims that the hardware is not capable of running the new software while staying clear of making any more promises that they cannot keep. So it seems that the Galaxy S users are going to be stuck on Gingerbread for the rest of their lives, assuming they stick to the official channel.

Pink colored Galaxy S II heading for Taiwan

December 30th, 2011

Samsung has announced that they will be launching the pink colored variant of the popular Galaxy S II smartphone in Taiwan. This shade has been in sale for a while now in Korea but this is the first time it is making an appearance in Taiwan.

The phone will go on sale starting January 1, 2012 and will cost TWD 21,900 (USD 722). Other than the color, the phone is identical to other Galaxy S II phones, wherein it has the same 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video, 1,650mAh battery and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Redesigned next-generation iPhone to launch next year in fall

December 28th, 2011

It was just a couple of months ago that the iPhone 4S was launched and the rumors for the next iPhone have already started crawling out of the woodwork. This newest one is courtesy BGR, who reports that they have heard from a close source that the next generation iPhone will launch in fall of 2012, which around the same time the 4S was released.

They also have information about the design, which is said to be completely new. The next iPhone will have an all-aluminum back which will be mated to the front glass surface by a combination of rubber and plastic sides, which is also where the antenna system will reside.

The shift to aluminum seems logical since the iPhone is the only Apple product to not use it in the construction of the device. Of course, aluminum will block the transmission and reception of signal, so the sides had to be made with a non-interfering material such as plastic or rubber.

We’d like to say we’ll find out soon if this information is correct or not but there is still almost an entire year to go before the next iPhone comes out.

LG Prada 3.0 is now available in Korea, will hit Europe in January

December 28th, 2011

LG is surely not wasting time in bringing its latest Prada 3.0 Android smartphone to the market. The device is already available for purchase in Korea – only two weeks after its official announcement.

The smartphone will become available in Europe and more Asian markets in January. No info on other countries has been given at the moment.

The LG Prada 3.0 contract price in Korea varies, depending on the wireless plan of your choice. In case you want the device sans any commitment, prepare to shell out 899,800 won (approximately $780). The aforementioned amount is right in line with the expected £499.99 price tag of the device in the UK.

You can check out LG Prada 3.0 impressive spec sheet here, and live pictures of the smartphone from its London launch party here.

Meizu MX will reportedly enter the quad-core realm in May 2012

December 28th, 2011

In our review of the Meizu MX from last week, we found the smartphone to be one of the most capable dual-core offerings on the market today. It appears however, that the Chinese company behind this peculiar smartphone has grander plans for its offspring. It released its plans for a quad-core version of the MX, which will be unveiled in May next year.

Rumor has it, that the quad-core Meizu MX will feature the Samsung made Exynos 4412 CPU – a logical speculation given the current CPU of the smartphone. Regardless of the silicon choice though, having a reasonably priced quad-core Android smartphone sounds like a neat idea to us.

Porsche Design BlackBerry P’9981 comes to the UK

December 26th, 2011

At first glimpse, we weren’t sure what to make of the strange metal-clad QWERTY bar, bestowed with the all-important BlackBerry logo atop its display. We at first, speculated its legitimacy, whether it was ushering in a new design language for the brand as a whole, or if it was some strange custom or special edition device.

It so happens that we didn’t have to wait long to find out its true intent. The hard lines and custom font etched onto that futuristic keyboard were the result of Porsche Design partnering up with the Canadian smartphone manufacturers to create something rather different. The result proved striking to say the least, but left many a ‘Berry fan somewhat lost or at least unsure at how to react.

It wasn’t until a month after its first appearance that we were given the true explanation for this peculiar device, but then everything made a little more sense. Dubbed the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981, it closely mirrored its everyday counterpart the Bold Touch 9900, with a 1.2GHz single core processor under the hood.

Other specs include a gig of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 5MP camera on the back with 720p HD video recording and of course BlackBerry OS 7, which in fact could make this the last BlackBerry out the gates before RIM focus their attentions on the BBX-laden ‘Colt’, or at least something like it.

The Porsche Design P’9981 was given its very own launch event in Dubai, back in late October with the choice of venue eluding to its luxury-focused target market. The P’9981 was expected to retail for around $2000 and now it comes to the UK market too. If you want one with the intention of giving it as a present for the big day, you only have a short window of opportunity left, but it’s available for a cool £1275 at the world renowned Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, London. Reports from the store themselves saying that demand is high and the device is selling fast.

Will you be picking up this unique ‘Berry, or perhaps making it a very special gift this holiday season?

Apple’s market share is declining in Europe, but expands in the US

December 23rd, 2011

Europe is in a tough financial situation and Apple’s shrinking market share despite the introduction of the iPhone 4S is a consequence of that. In markets like the US, the UK and Australia, the 4S is selling like hot cakes but continental Europe is another story.

Analysts from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech noted that Apple’s market share in France has slipped over the last quarter (from 29% to 20%) and the same thing has happened in Germany (27% to 22%), Italy and Spain too.

For comparison, Apple’s market share in the US grew from 25% to 36% over the period of a year. The UK market share expanded at a similar pace – it went from 21% top 31% comparing Q3 2011 over Q3 2010.

The iPhone’s arch rivals, the Android phones, are enjoying a leading position across European countries with market shares ranging between 46% and 61%. In Germany, Android has one of the highest shares (61%) with the Samsung Galaxy S II pointed out as the best-selling handset.

Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V to come in Champagne Gold color

December 22nd, 2011

Think the current range of color options for the Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V is not enough? Does your heart desire for something a bit more classy?

Then soon enough you will be able to get your hands on a Champagne Gold colored version of the Xperia neo V, provided you are in Taiwan. The new shade is expected to go on sale sometime in early 2012. No word on whether it will be available in other markets as well.

The phone is otherwise identical to the standard Xperia neo V in every other way. And by that we mean it has the same 3.7-inch, 854 x 480 resolution display, single-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor with Adreno 205 GPU, 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, although Sony Ericsson has promised an Ice Cream Sandwich update for it in 2012.

Sony Ericsson reveals Xperia ICS update roadmap

December 22nd, 2011

Sony Ericsson’s R&D center has obviously been making significant progress with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia lineup, as the company is now ready to talk specific dates.

A post on the company’s blog has pledged a start of the updating process for the Xperia smartphones to the latest Android version at the end of March/early April 2012. The first batch of Sony Ericsson phones to get a taste of ICS includes Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray.

The update rollout for the second wave will begin from the end April or the start of May 2012. At that point the other seven Xperia smartphones eligible for an update will start getting in – Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active. The only non-Xperia Sony Ericsson to get an ICS update, Live with Walkman will also join this second group.

And don’t worry, Sony Ericsson will make sure that you will be properly notified when the time to update your phone comes.

New Belle ROM for Nokia N8 leaks, see the changes on video

December 20th, 2011

The fan favorite, the Nokia N8, is a bit behind the times with its Symbian Anna OS, but a Belle update is incoming. A second Belle firmware has leaked (the first one came a couple of months ago) and this time it’s reportedly running much better.

The ROM is version 111.030.609, newer than even the leaked ROM for the C7 that we saw a while back. There’s a good deal of new widgets and the transitions run very smoothly even on the aging 680MHz processor.

Here’s a lengthy video that showcases the Belle firmware running on a Nokia N8:

It looks pretty cool, but unfortunately tells us nothing about the release date of the finalized software, just that it’s soon.

You can grab the firmware from here. As always, it’s an update at your own risk type of deal.

British Telecom sues Google over six US patents

December 20th, 2011

Google broke all sorts of records with its Android operating system, but its rapid growth is coming at a pretty high price. There’s already a lengthy list of companies that want a piece of the search giant’s healthy income and we just heard there’s a new addition to it.

British Telecommunications plc (more commonly known as British Telecom) has filed a lawsuit with the Delaware US District Court, claiming that Google is infringing six of its patents with its services and the Android platform.

British Telecom is demanding triple damages for willful and deliberate infringement of its patents as well as an injunction against the violating services. The patents in question concern Google Music, Google Maps, Google Search, Google+ and even Google Offers.

For the legal specifics of the case follow the source link for the full text of the complaint, filled by BT.

Samsung releases Android 4.0.1 custom ROM for Galaxy S II

December 19th, 2011

Last week Samsung released the Android 4.0.1 custom ROM for the Galaxy S II for those eager to try it out on their devices before the official update starts rolling out sometime next year. The second version of that ROM has now been released.

It is still version 4.0.1 and not the latest 4.0.3 that Google released, although in Samsung’s defense it was just released and since this ROM was created on December 8, there was no way they could have had the latest version, although we expect the future ROM updates to run the latest version of Android.

According to SamMobile.com this update is faster but still has some bugs in it and runs the TouchWiz skin on top, but that’s not very surprising.

To download the custom ROM (assuming you know what you’re doing), click on the source link below.

GSM Galaxy Nexus gets 4.0.2 update, 4.0.3 announced already

December 19th, 2011

Google is on a roll with the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Galaxy Nexus. After releasing the 4.0.2 update for the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus, the have now released the same update to its GSM sibling as well. This update brings the same changes as the one on the LTE version and is 8.7MB in size.

But that’s not all. Google has also announced the upcoming 4.0.3 update for the Galaxy Nexus, which includes bug fixes, performance updates and new APIs for the developers that includes social stream API in Contacts provider, Calendar provider enhancements, improved access to camera features and improvement to accessibility features.

Google also wants 4.0.3 as the base version of Ice Cream Sandwich to be used by Android handset manufacturers. The update is said to be made available in the coming weeks.

Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 launch in India

December 17th, 2011

Nokia is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to the success of their Lumia duo in India. The Windows Phone running pair is launching today with the biggest-ever campaign in the country, including some pretty exclusive events.

The Nokia Lumia 800 will be available for Rs 29,999 (that’s about $570 or €435;), while the Lumia 710 will go for Rs 18,999 ($360/€275). Those are prices for SIM-free devices.

The two will feature Nokia Drive, the free voice-guided navigation, and Nokia Music with MixRadio, a music streaming service.

Nokia’s Amazing Everyday campaign in India make the Lumia 800 in ice stunt look amateurish – the brochure to the left details all the events and promotions planned. Apparently, even Nokia’s employee’s have been having a lot of fun with the launch of the two Lumias, with different events in the office that started on Monday and continued on until yesterday.

But today, they’re all outside the office attending the big events for the public to promote the new phones. Thousands of retail stores across the country will feature live demoes of the phones, but you can also check out our Lumia 800 review.

Nokia has a lot riding on the success of their Windows Phone endeavor and they still have a strong presence in India, which explains their all-out approach to the launch.

White Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 shows up in the UK for Christmas

December 17th, 2011

We knew that the Galaxy Y, among other smartphones, will be offered in white for the Christmas holidays in Germany, but now the white Galaxy Y has appeared in the UK as well.

The black version of the phone has been on offer for a few months, but Phones4U has the white one on a few different offers. You can get it on a Pay As You Go plan for £79.95 (approx. €95) or for free on various plans for carriers such as O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile.

But before heading over to the source link for more pricing information be sure to check out our in-depth review of the Samsung Galaxy Y.

Phones4U also offers some other phones in white – like the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Ace, if you’re looking for a higher-end snow-colored droid by Samsung.

Nokia Lumia 710 announced for T-Mobile US, live shots inside

December 15th, 2011

Nokia has just announced the T-Mobile USA version of the Windows Phone 7-based Lumia 710. It was supposed to be unveiled on a special event tonight in New York, but Nokia spilled the beans earlier.

The US version of the Lumia 710 is the same as the one announced back in October – a 3.7-inch ClearBlack WVGA display, a 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording, 8GB internal storage and the usual connectivity options. The Lumia 710 is based on the MSM8255 Snapdragon platform featuring a 1.4GHz single-core processor, Adreno 205 graphics and 512MB RAM.

Nokia Lumia 710 runs on the latest version of Windows Phone – 7.5 Mango – and comes with free life-time maps and navigation.

Update: We just got back from a glitzy party in New York City, hosted by Nokia and T-Mobile, where we got a chance to go hands-on with the Lumia 710.

The device will hit the shelves in black or white color scheme. Oddly enough, the white version will ship with a black battery cover. We were told by the representative that different colored covers will be sold separately.

Here are the hands-on photos:

T-Mobile USA is going to launch the phone on January 11 next year. It will cost $49 after rebate on a two-year contract with a call and data plan.

Live from the LG Prada 3.0 event in London, photos inside

December 15th, 2011

The LG Prada 3.0, the third phone to come from the partnership of the two companies was presented at a special event in London tonight. As we reported earlier, the LG Prada 3.0 is a beefed up droid with more than decent looks, which should appeal to men and women alike.

Under its fashionable suit, the Prada 3.0 isn’t anything short of a powerful smartphone with its 1GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8MP camera and the bright 4.3 NOVA display touting 800 nits brightness. Naturally, the device will also feature GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HSPA+ and FM Radio.

But the LG Prada 3.0 is not only for go and no show. As this is a Prada device, the fashion company has put a lot of effort for their latest smartphone to look the part. The device boasts an extremely thin profile of mere 8.5mm and a special leather-looking plastic covering the back cover called Saffiano.

The phone also comes with a bunch of interesting accessories. One of them is an MHL adapter which also doubles as a kick stand. Other accessories include headphones and bluetooth headset, which you can see from the photos below. Later on a docking station will be available as well.

And now here is how the Prada phone looks like in hand.

We also shot a juicy video of the Prada 3.0′s user interface. Head over to our blog to check it out.

Expect the Prada smartphone to hit South Korea and Western Europe in January 2012. Unfortunately, prices are still not available, but an update to Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to arrive some time next year.

Nokia N803 user guide leaks, could be the N8 successor

December 15th, 2011

pocketnow.com has acquired the user guide to a certain Nokia 803 running on Symbian Belle. One look at the outline of the phone in the images makes it clear that this phone will put significant focus on the camera performance, and could just be the successor to the Nokia N8, which is known for its excellent camera.

There is no mention of the camera specifications but we are assuming Nokia will use an improved version of the N8 sensor, perhaps an even bigger version of it. There are also rumors of the phone having optical zoom, which, if true, will instantly make this the must-have phone for any camera phone lover.

There is some information regarding the internal hardware of this phone. Apparently, it will have a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 3.5-inch, WVGA resolution display, NFC, HDMI and DLNA connectivity.

The phone is also expected to be announced at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in February, so we will find out more then.

Samsung planning to launch the dual-SIM version of Galaxy Y Pro

December 14th, 2011

We received an anonymous tip today with a picture of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Y Pro Duos, a dual-SIM version of the Galaxy Y Pro.

Unfortunately for us, there was no additional information regarding the phone so we’ll just go out on a limb and say it will mostly be identical to the existing Galaxy Y Pro. The only difference that we spotted from the picture, other than the presence of the Duos logo above the display, is a front facing camera for video calls.

Sadly, once again, we have no information regarding the price and availability of the handset.

The Nyphon to be the first Xperia phone by Sony, live pics leak

December 14th, 2011

With the mystery surrounding the Sony Ericsson Xperia Nozomi now almost completely gone, the rumor mill is focusing on the next smartphones by the company. And the one, which just appeared on some leaked shots should be some way off in the future as it’s only carrying the Sony branding.

Sony Ericsson is to become just Sony in mid-2012 so we probably won’t see the smartphone pictured below until then. And if its rumored specs sheet turns out correct, we are not sure the waiting will be worth it.

Rumor has it that the Sony LT22, now codenamed Nyphon (naturally, that last bit is just a codename), will come with the upcoming 1GHz dual-core U8500 chipset, built by ST-Ericsson and a 4″ qHD display. There will be an 8 megapixel Exmor R camera, featuring a backlit sensor inside, along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

The Sony Nyphon will be running Android Gingerbread at launch, but will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich eventually. And if you are thinking “How is this better than the Sony Ericsson Nozomi?” you are not alone, but not all smartphones are born to be flagships and maybe this one is going to rely on an attractive price tag to find its place in the market.

EXCLUSIVE: Big Sony Ericsson Arc HD (Nozomi) live shots pop up

December 13th, 2011

Now look what we found in our mailbox this morning. We just received photos of the upcoming Sony Ericsson flagship and some specs to go with them. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the name cleared out so we don’t know if the earlier, Sony Ericsson Arc HD rumors carry some water or not.

The smartphone codenamed Sony Ericsson Xperia Nozomi will come with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread at launch and will be built around a 4.3″ LCD display of HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels). The 12 megapixel camera with FullHD video recording was also confirmed by our tipster.

Next, the rumored Snapdragon chipset featuring a couple of 1.5GHz Scorpion cores and the Adreno 220 GPU is indeed what you will be getting on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc HD. There will be an HDMI port as well, so sharing 1080p content with your HDTV will be a breeze.

Sadly, the Arc HD will lack a microSD card slot and you’ll have to make do with the 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage (depending on the version you pick). At least, with 1GB of RAM your multitasking needs should be taken care of pretty well.

Interestingly, though, the handset uses a microSIM slot and the battery seems non-user-removable.

The tipster couldn’t provide us with an official launch date, but we are keeping our fingers crossed for an announcement at CES at the start of next year.

Samsung beats its 2010 record, sells 300 million phones in 2011

December 13th, 2011

Samsung execs can pop the champagne early – in 2011, they sold more phones than they’ve sold ever before, a cool 300 million units. That’s up from 280 million in 2010, which itself was a big improvement over 2009.

The South Korean company is currently the second largest phone maker by volume (counting smartphones and feature phones), trailing Nokia.

Samsung’s flagship Android phone, the Galaxy S II contributed a significant chunk of the sales – 10 million units (at least, that number was announced in late September). That makes it a record seller for Samsung, considering it first hit the shelves in April.

Samsung’s president and head of the Mobile communications business, JK Shin, says “We look forward to extending this success going into 2012″.

The elusive white Nokia N9 is now available

December 9th, 2011

Nokia has just released the white color version of its MeeGo flagship. The white Nokia N9 was officially announced at this year’s Nokia World, but it’s only now that you can actually purchase one.

We were contacted by one of our readers, who found white Nokia N9 units in a couple of Finnish retail stores. For now these only come in 64GB flavor but at least cost only as much as their black siblings – €629.90.

The white Nokia N9 shares most of its hardware with the black version, but its non-painted unibody is made from glossy, rather than matte plastic. It turned out that the white matte plastic was too easy to get messed up in everyday use, so Nokia went for plastic instead.

We are yet to see if the WP-running Nokia Lumia 800, which shares the N9 body will get a white version, too.

Check out those live shots of the new Nokia N9 that we took at Nokia World 2011 and don’t forget to drop us a line in the comments, sharing your thoughts on this beauty. And if you are planning to actually get it and you happen to live in Finland you might follow one of the two source links below to place your order.

New clues of Nokia Champagne and Lumia 900 WP phones appear

December 9th, 2011

We’ve known for a while now that the Nokia Lumia 800 isn’t the real WP flagship by the Finns – the elusive Nokia Lumia 900 will probably take on that role and it just left another clue of its existence. And it brought a friend.

A Windows Phone app, Times of India, was downloaded and used by a Nokia Lumia 900 and a Nokia Champagne, both of which running Windows Phone. But they’re running a newer build of WP – 7.10.8725 (7.1 is the internal version for 7.5 Mango).

Could this be the Tango version of Windows Phone that we’ve heard of? Our earlier encounter with the Champagne suggests that it is.

As for the Lumia 900, we’ve seen it a couple of times before and heard about some its specs – namely, a 4.3″ ClearBlack AMOLED and 1GB RAM. That’s what the leaked brochure claimed, anyway.

AT&T will bring their LTE to New York City by the end of the month

December 9th, 2011

AT&T is bringing its LTE magic to its subscribers in New York by the end of this year. The official confirmation came from the company’s senior executive vice president and CFO John Stephens.

The carrier vowed to bring LTE coverage to 70 million users in the US by the end of this month and adding the country’s most populous city to the list of covered areas seems like the most logical move.

AT&T still has plenty of catching up to do, as Verizon started building its LTE network almost a full year earlier. Thanks to that, the Big Red also offers a wider portfolio of LTE-sporting smartphones and they are now expected to start selling the LTE version of the hotly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

The AT&T LTE network, on the other hand, benefits from the lower number of users and is capable of offering better speeds, user reports suggest. So, if you have AT&T coverage where you live, now might be the best time to get yourselves a Super AMOLED Plus-packing Galaxy S II Skyrocket or an HD AH-IPS-touting LG Nitro HD.

Nokia to sell Vertu to fund the smartphone business

December 9th, 2011

Nokia is reportedly considering selling its Vertu branch for luxurious smartphones. According to the Financial Times sources, the Finns are hoping to use the money from selling Vertu to fund their smartphone business, which hasn’t been doing so well lately.

The asking price for company is still unclear as Vertu doesn’t publish its financial results separately, but evaluation is said to be currently taking place. The Vertu annual revenue is estimated to be somewhere between €200 million and €300 million, which seems like a lot considering the small market niche that Vertu services. Furthermore, the company is said to making a healthy profit each year, though there were no specific numbers mentioned.

Nokia has, reportedly, appointed Goldman Sachs to oversee the sale of its subsidiary. Vertu is said to have attracted quite a lot of interest from private equity groups and luxury goods brands, but talks are still at early stages.

Nokia has declined an official comment on the story, but more info should start coming up as negotiations advance.

Google’s Android Market reaches 10 billion downloads

December 7th, 2011

Verizon is on a roll today – the carrier just announced a couple of new Android tablets to go with the white Motorola Droid RAZR. The DROID XYBOARD tablets come in 10.1″ and 8.2″ flavors and carry pretty attractive price tags.

The fancy names aside, these are merely the LTE editions of the Motorola XOOM 2, and XOOM 2 Media Edition, which where announced a month ago. To refresh your memory, they sport 1280×800 pixel IPS displays and 1.2GHz dual-core processors bundled with 1GB of RAM.

Connectivity is covered nicely: there’s Wi-Fi, HDMI port and an infrared port (so the tablets can be used as remote controls) on both of them. The 4G LTE connection can be used as a mobile hotspot, allowing up to eight Wi-Fi tethered devices to connect.

Both the 10.1-inch and 8.2-inch DROID XYBOARDs will be available by the end of the year with the 10.1″ slate going for $529.99 with 16GB of storage, $629.99 for double that amount and $729.99 for the 64GB version. As for the DROID XYBOARD 8.2, only 16GB and 32GB version will be available for $429.99 and $529.99, respectively. Those prices seem pretty good for LTE-flaunting slates.

White Motorola DROID RAZR hits Verizon this month, same price

December 7th, 2011

Verizon has officially announced that a white version of the Motorola DROID RAZR will hit shelves in time for the holiday season.

Besides the color of the frame, nothing has really changed in the smartphone hardware. It features the same 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced screen, a dual-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A9 processor and 1GB of RAM as its black sibling.

Verzion remains mum about the exact release date of the white RAZR, but the carrier said that users should expect it by the end of the month. The smartphone will cost you $299.99 with a new two-year contract.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus to sell for $299.99 on two-year contract

December 7th, 2011

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus rumor train is going at full speed. Today we got a new story about the pricing of the Android Ice Cream Sandwich pioneer on the big red US network.

Wall Street Journal has it that, despite earlier rumors pointing at a $199 price tag on a contract, the Galaxy Nexus will cost $299.99 as initially expected. That’s the kind of price that gets you an HTC Rezound, which carries a specs sheet quite close to that of the Samsung new flagship.

The new information is said to come from people close to the matter, but the source doesn’t get any more specific than this. Unfortunately we weren’t provided with a target release date either, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to see if the “this Friday” rumors are correct.

We are sure many of you are eagerly waiting for the saga to end and the Galaxy Nexus to hit the Verizon stores as it’ll make a great present, so we’ll keep you updated as soon as new info comes up.

Next Prada phone by LG to land December 14, we’ll be there

December 5th, 2011

It’s always a good thing to open our mailbox and get a surprise invite to a hot new event set on announcing something new and exciting. Well we just got surprised today by an invitation to an event held by Prada and LG on Wednesday, December 14 in London.

To get right down to it – we expect to see the chic LG Prada K2. It should feature a 4.3″ IPS LCD capacitive display of WVGA (480 x 800) resolution, 8 MP sharpshooter on the back, Android under the hood and a thin profile of 8.8 mm.

We’re waiting to see what kind of processor it will utilize and the exact number of cores . The Prada phones were among the first non-Apple devices to use capacitive screen technology back in 2008 and 2009, you know.

We’ll be there to cover the event, so be sure to check back in 12 days from now.

Rotten Core: Nokia lose huge market share in their homeland

December 5th, 2011

There’s a state of unease within Nokia at the moment and unsurprisingly so. With the first Nokia-Microsoft lovechild now out in the market (the Lumia 800, you might have heard of it) and an aggressive marketing strategy in place to drum up interest in Windows Phone-laden Nokia’s coming fresh out of the factory, the Finnish company have been waiting with bated breath to see how consumers will receive this new-era Nokia.

They’ve shown a resilience to the tough times they’ve faced already and since the partnership announcement in February, many wondered just how this shift would affect the company’s image. By bringing Microsoft in, they’ve inherently changed the way they operate and the way fans of the brand expect them to operate. Sure they brought the Asha lineup to maintain support for their Symbian products and the N9 is taking point in markets where the Lumia 800 isn’t, but now Windows Phone is Nokia and as Stephen Elop so boldly said at Nokia World, the Lumia 800 is “the first real Windows Phone device.”

Not only could a statement like that upset the likes of HTC, LG and Samsung, all of whom license Windows Phone from Microsoft, but the hardcore fans of what we could call the ‘old’ Nokia also might not welcome the change, and that is a notion that has the potential to hold water in this case.

The Finns have been proud of the globally recognized giant that is Nokia and it’s probably one of the key things those from outside of the country associate with it, but a recent report from Helsinki’s Taloussanomat shows that pride only takes support so far. In the last 12 months, Nokia have lost 45% of the market share taking their dominance from 76% right down to 31%.

Of course they still have the top spot, but the gap has dramatically narrowed, with the majority of their sales now in the possession of Samsung who have risen sharply from a mere 3% to 25% in the same amount of time. Apple then take third place with 16% in Q3 2011, with Sony Ericsson and Huawei sharing 11% each, leaving the remaining 6% of the market currently to ZTE.

This doesn’t automatically spell the end for Nokia of course, far from it, but it still must be unnerving for them. The financial quarter in question actually precedes the announcement of the Lumia and Asha handsets, but as such, it does indicate that the change was necessary. It makes more sense for Nokia to have changed tack altogether, than continue along the road they were currently on and let’s not forget the Finnish market is important for Nokia, but relatively speaking, it’s a small one, with Finland’s entire population around the 5 million mark.

Once the holiday season and the final financial quarter conclude we should get at least an initial indication of the impact the Lumia 800 is making. Until then however it’s a case of crossing fingers and seeing if Nokia are able to reassure the old fans, as well as attracting new ones.

What would you say Nokia should do to maximize their potential in 2012, ideas in the comments. Read the full Taloussanomat report here (Finnish) and why not check out our new review of the Nokia Lumia 800 as well by clicking here.

Nokia X2-02 announced: Two SIMs and a music soul inside

December 2nd, 2011

Nokia just unveiled the latest addition to its featurephone lineup. The Nokia X2-02 is a dual-SIM phone running on the Series 40 UI that relies mainly on its attractive price tag to attract customers.

The Nokia X2-02 is built around a 2.2″ LCD of QVGA resolution (240×320 pixels). It has a couple of SIM slots, a SIM manager that makes managing them easier and even allows hot-swapping of SIM cards.

There’s a 2MP camera and an FM radio receiver, an FM transmitter and a 3.5mm audio jack onboard the Nokia X2-02. The microSD card slot allows you to expand the storage by up to 32GB, so you can have all the space you need for your music collection. A microUSB port enables easy transferring of said collection.

The Nokia X2-02 lacks 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, so you’re stuck with EDGE if you want to browse the web on this one.

The Nokia X2-02 is expected to cost around €60 before taxes and subsides, but there’s no information about its availability just yet.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi allegedly official photo leaks

December 2nd, 2011

You cannot expect many new product announcements to happen in December as manufacturers are concerned it would hurt the sales of their current crop of devices, but there’s no stopping the rumor train.

Today we’ve got what might be an official photo of the upcoming Sony Ericsson flagship, nicknamed Nozomi. That smartphone, which is expected to come out of MWC in February 2012, is said to feature a 12MP camera, 720p screen and, as evident from the render, an impressively slim waistline.

The Nozomi should be the first Sony Ericsson smartphone to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box (though the current Xperia phones should get that too).

Sadly, there’s no way to confirm the authenticity of the leaked image, so you’d have to take it with a pinch of salt. They do fall nicely in line with the live photos of the Nozomi that popped up not long ago but for all we know, the render could be created based on these same images.

White Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket coming these days

December 2nd, 2011

AT&T and Samsung just announced that a white version of the 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket is to make its way to the stores for the holiday season. This is a great opportunity if you want to get your hands on the 4G monster, but black is just a tad too serious for your liking.

Underneath the white shell, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket is the same as its black-suited twin, featuring a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and a gig of RAM. Here are some official photos for you to look at.

The price for the Skyrocket remains the same, as before – $250 with a two-year contract on AT&T’s new and fresh 4G LTE network. Expect the device to show up on December 4, but you are more than welcome to check out our review while waiting.

Korean Galaxy Nexus to have an extended 2,000mAh battery

November 30th, 2011

If you were worried about the battery life on the Galaxy Nexus then you can stop worrying, at least if you’re in Korea. Because Samsung has decided to treat its motherland with an extended battery pack.

The Korean version of the Galaxy Nexus will not only come with the standard 1,750mAh battery but also an extra, 2,000mAh battery along with a separate battery cover to accommodate the larger battery.

In comparison the Galaxy Nexus in Europe comes with only the 1,750mAh battery whereas the US version will have a bigger 1,850mAh battery and also a slightly different (read: Thicker) design. Hard to say who got the short end of the stick; the Europeans who got the smallest battery or the Americans who haven’t even got the phone yet.

It’s likely though that Samsung will provide the larger battery along with the special battery cover as an option in other markets.

iPhone 4 goes into ‘self combustion’ mode on a flight

November 30th, 2011

One of the iPhone 4 decided to go rogue yesterday while on board a flight to Sydney. Just as the flight was about to land the device was said to produce ‘a significant amounts of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow’, according to the Australian airline Regional Express.

No one knows what could have triggered the incident but looking at the marks on the back of the phone, it was likely caused due to a faulty battery.

Fortunately, other than creating a bit of panic no one was harmed due to the occurrence of this incident. Whether it was caused due to the phone being on-board a flight is yet to be determined.

As of now the device has been detained by Australian Transport Safety Bureau for analysis.

LG announces Android 4.0 ICS upgrade plans

November 29th, 2011

LG might be slow on the actual upgrades, but at least it’ on time with the announcements. While most of the latest Optimus siblings are getting their first Gingerbread bite just now, LG announces they are all going to taste Ice Cream Sandwich too.

The lucky devices are LG Optimus 3D, Optimus 2X, Optimus Black and Optimus LTE. The upgrade roadmap will be announced in December on the official LG Facebook page.

LG also promises it is exploring its options for bringing the Android 4.0 to some older Optimus smartphones too. So there is a tiny chance the Optimus One and Optimus Chic might get some Ice Cream Sandwich treatment as well.

Motorola DROID 4 official images and specifications leak

November 28th, 2011

Last month we came across some leaked hands-on images of the upcoming Motorola DROID 4 smartphone, showing the new DROID RAZR-esque design paired with the signature slide-out QWERTY keypad.

Today we have some official images of the handset and a specification chart, courtesy of Droid Life. These images show us that the new DROID 4 does look strikingly similar to the DROID RAZR as long as it is closed. Even the back has a similar look with a bump at the top that has become common on the DROID handsets.

Under the display is a spacious looking full QWERTY keypad with a white backlight that shines through the gaps between the keys.

As for the specifications, the DROID 4 has a 4.0-inch qHD display with Gorilla Glass protection, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, ‘HD” front facing camera, 4G LTE connectivity and a 1,785mAh battery. Unfortunately, the phone will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread instead of the new Ice Cream Sandwich.

You can check out the rest of the specifications and images in the source link below.

IPCom seeking to ban sales of HTC 3G devices in Germany

November 27th, 2011

Things are surely now going well for HTC at the moment. First we saw that HTC lost the S3 patent leverage and then came the news that their Q4 revenue actually fell. Now we are hearing that patent firm IPCom, who had sued HTC back in 2009 and managed to get an injunction against them could end up banning the sales of HTC 3G devices in Germany.

As it happens, HTC was found guilty of infringing on some of IPCom’s patents on UMTS 3G technology, which is how IPCom managed to get an injunction against HTC in the German court. HTC tried to get the injunction suspended but the court declined to do so. So now as it stands, HTC will either have to pay big bucks to IPCom for using their patents or get their devices banned from selling in Germany.

In either case it seems HTC is loosing but if it takes the latter approach a lot of people in Germany will end up in the losing camp as well, although it is unlikely that they will do that.

LTE-flaunting Galaxy S II Skyrocket gets 2.3.6 OTA update

November 26th, 2011

The AT&T-branded Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket is in the moment receiving and OTA update to Android Gingerbread 2.3.6. The itself doesn’t specify what’s new but we’re guessing the run of the mill array of bug fixes is included.

It could also address the Google voice search issue some users have reported but that isn’t specified either.

The update is available now via the settings menu under software updates, it’s an over the air update so all you need is a stellar connection to the internet and enough battery juice to go through the process.

T-Mobile UK launches midrange Vivacity droid, free on contract

November 26th, 2011

T-Mobile UK have unveiled their Vivacity Android smartphone, available today for as little as free of charge on a £10 per month deal or £99 on pay as you go. It will be available starting today at T-Mobile stores, the online shop and telesales.

Specs are middle of the road matching the low asking price. On the front there’s a 3.5″ 16M color TFT of WVGA (480 x 800) resolution capacitive touchscreen display. On the back there’s a 5 MP snapper, while the inside goodies include HSDPA, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS and Android Gingerbread 2.3 among others.

The T-Mobile Vivacity is lightweight at 118 g and thin at 10.5 mm. There’s no official word on the processor type or clock speed but it is a safe bet that it will be single and not dual-core one. It will be available in both black and white variants.

“The T-Mobile Vivacity gives you everything you want from a smartphone. It offers the latest Android software, a large, high resolution touchscreen display and a stunning design – perfect for anyone looking for premium performance and great value for money.” Says Paul Jevons, Director of Products and Devices at Everything Everywhere (the T-Mobile UK and Orange UK venture).

Cyan Nokia Lumia 800 hits Three UK

November 26th, 2011

If you like the Nokia Lumia 800, but find its primary black color a bit too conservative for your taste, we’ve got some great news for you. The cyan version of the WP smartphone just went on sale at the UK carrier Three.

The news was confirmed by the company’s official Twitter account, but its official website still doesn’t mention anything about a cyan Lumia 800. So, if you want to get yourself a shiny new cyan unit, you’d have to visit one of Three’s brick and mortar stores.

But for the different color of the non-painted plastic unibody, the cyan Lumia 800 is identical to its black sibling. There are no changes to either the materials used or the internals of the device, but we guess the color change is enough to make it targeted at quite different audience.

It’s yet unclear when the other carriers will get the cyan and pink versions of the Lumia 800, but those should come up soon enough.

Galaxy S II LTE is the first LTE device launched in Japan

November 25th, 2011

US, Europe and Australia may be one of the lucky countries to get LTE but there are still a lot left that are bereft of this amazing new technology and one of them, surprisingly, is Japan, one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world.

But that is about to change now as Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has launched the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE in the country, which will be the first phone to be officially launched with LTE on-board. Although NTT DoCoMo did have LTE network in the country since last year, they did not actually have any devices that would make use of it till now.

With this new handset, the carrier expects to compete against the new iPhone that the other two carriers in Japan offer. The Galaxy S II LTE will be priced at ¥20,000 ($258) and come with a two-year contract.

Motorola PRO+ was announced back in August but it’s just today it finally made its way on the market. The Gingerbread-running messenger is available on Clove UK for £320 and on Amazon DE for €320. We expect more retailers to announce its availability any moment now.

The Motorola PRO+ runs on a single-core 1GHz processor and packs a 3.1″ VGA touchscreen protected with Gorilla Glass, a four-row portrait QWERTY keyboard, a 5 megapixel snapper, 4GB storage, 512MB RAM and the usual connectivity options.

The Motorola PRO+ comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and pre-installed office package for viewing and editing documents.

Motorola Droid RAZR source code released, modders rejoice

November 25th, 2011

Motorola has just released the Motorola Droid RAZR source code, enabling modders to start making modifications to it. The super slim Android smartphone has been on sale for two weeks now, so the release of the source code will hardly raise many eyebrows.

The release of the source code should start to bear fruit in the following days and weeks when various tweaks and low-level software customizations for the Droid RAZR should start popping up.

Any developers willing to check out the code should follow the source link. The rest will probably find the arrival of the Droid RAZR’s European sibling to the office more interesting.

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Nexus hits online US shelves

November 24th, 2011

Hide your kids! Hide your wife! But more importantly, hide your wallet! Because the Galaxy Nexus has just hit US stores and it ain’t cheap.

Currently, we are only hearing about one retailer in the US named Expansys USA who claims to have the device in stock. The phone will be sold unlocked to anyone willing to part $750 of their hard-earned (or otherwise) cash and will work on AT&T and T-Mobile network.

That is quite a steep price but not for those who just can’t wait any longer and don’t have a problem spending that kind of money on a device that, let’s face it, will be outmoded when the next big thing in the Android world comes out, like, say, the Galaxy S III. Which will be just a few months from now.

Of course, you do have an option to wait for the Verizon version of the phone. Which should be out, one of these days. Probably.

If you’d rather buy it now, click the source link below.

Fujitsu Arrows F-07D is now the world’s thinnest smartphone

November 24th, 2011

The battle for the thinnest smartphone continues. But while the others were fighting, the Fujitsu Arrows F-07D managed to slip through the gaps and took the crown for the world’s thinnest smartphone. For the moment, at least.

It manages to achieve this by being just 6.6mm thick. Also, unlike some of the other thin phones that came out recently, such as the Motorola RAZR and the Samsung Galaxy S II, the Arrow is actually uniformly thick without any bulges.

Inside that super slim body is a 4-inch, 854 x 480 resolution display with Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection, single-core 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM and 1GB internal storage. The phone runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Fujitsu Arrows F-07D will be available in Japan in 2012 on the NTT DoCoMo network.

Samsung smartphones go white for the holidays in Germany

November 23rd, 2011

If you live in Germany and have been waiting for a white colored version of Samsung’s latest Android smartphones then you’re in luck. Because this Christmas Samsung will be making your wish come true.

Samsung has announced that they will be launching white colored versions of some of their recent Android smartphones in Germany. This includes the Galaxy Y, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S Plus and the Galaxy Note.

Apart from the new color scheme though, there is not much else new on these devices, with both the specifications and the pricing remaining the same.

LG Mobile to launch a new device on December 1

November 23rd, 2011

Fans of LG smartphones, mark December 1, 2011 on your calendar. Because that’s the day LG will be announcing a new smartphone, and it is rumored it will be the Nitro HD.

The image above is the press release the LG sent out for the event. As you can see there is no information regarding the device to be announced other than the fact that it will be an exclusive launch event. However, Engadget, from whom the above image is sourced from, mentions that the image was actually named LG Nitro, which, to us, is enough proof that this will in fact be about the Nitro HD.

As you may know, the LG Nitro HD is LG’s next flagship device that will come with all the bells, whistles, clowns and flashing neon lights that you can think of. It will have a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 IPS-LCD, 1.5GHz dual-core Scorpion processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage space with microSD card slot, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, LTE connectivity and of course, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The device is intended to launch on the AT&T network in the US but there could be a version for international markets. We will find out more next week.

Ice Cream Sandwich custom ROM now available for the Nexus S

November 21st, 2011

Earlier this week when Google released the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich we knew it won’t be long before developers start coming up with custom ICS ROMs for other Android devices. And one such ROM has just surfaced.

Created by xda-developer member ‘kwiboo’, this custom ROM is currently only meant for the Nexus S and its variants. From what we can tell, the ROM is pretty stable with just minor issues such as lack of data usage statistics and USB mass storage support at the moment but expect these to be fixed soon.

You can download the ROM by clicking on the source link below.

Samsung releases the Galaxy Ace Hugo Boss edition

November 19th, 2011

After the successful collaboration with Giorgio Armani on the special edition of Galaxy S, Samsung is now friends again with Hugo Boss as back in the days of Samsung F480. The fruit of the their new cooperation is the Galaxy Ace Hugo Boss edition.

After taking a look at it you can clearly see why Samsung and Hugo Boss dub this device as being specially tailored to the lifestyle of the fashion brand’s customers. The smartphone has a matte black finish abd the back cover has been given special treatment from the designers over at Hugo Boss.

But the modifications don’t stop on the outside. The Ace Hugo Boss also features special wallpapers to make your Hugo Boss stand out from the crowd of Samsung Aces even further.

Samsung Ace Hugo Boss official photos

Unfortunately, that’s about the changes the special collaboration between the two companes brings to the table. Hardware-wise, the Ace Hugo Boss has not changed a bit from the original. The smartphone still features a 3.5-inch 320×480 pixels screen, 800MHz single-core processor, 5MP autofocus camera and the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microSD slot found on most Android smartphones.

Happily though, the Samsung Ace Hugo Boss runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and will be available pretty soon at selected Hugo Boss stores as well as on their website. There’s no official pricing but we spotted a store that has it for about 280 euros taxes included. If you can afford Hugo Boss costumes, that sort of cash should be pocket money to you.

Motorola Defy+ gets a JCB edition, gets even tougher

November 19th, 2011

The Motorola Defy+, one of the most durable smartphones on the market, just got even tougher. The IP67-certified droid is now available in a new version dubbed JCB edition.

While the Motorola Defy+ JCB edition brings no changes to the internals of the device, it has an exclusive JCB branded case in the retail package. The case is specially created for the Defy+ and should improve its shock resistance significantly.

The limited JCB edition of the Motorola Defy+ will also come with an extended, 2-year warranty and an exclusive retail package. The JCB app will be preinstalled on the device, as well. That one includes six tools (Therodolite, Spirit Level, Torch, Decibel Reader and a B&Q store locator).

The SIM-free price of the smartphone is £268.80 and you’ll be able to order it come December 6.

Samsung Galaxy S gets Android 2.3.5 update in the UK

November 19th, 2011

The original Samsung Galaxy S resigned from the role of a flagship quite some time ago, but it’s good to know that it’s still getting good treatment by its maker. Samsung just started seeding the Android 2.3.5 update to the I9000 units in the UK, or at least to those of them who didn’t already get it by the dark means of manually flashing one of the leaked ROMs.

The changelog includes a batch of bugfixes to the system apps, some performance tweaks and the stock Gingerbread glow when you reach the end of a list. The messaging app got some improvements as well and it should now launch and operate much faster.

Battery life should also see an improvement after the update as Samsung have done some work to optimize the power consumption of the smartphone.

The update is said to wipe your apps and data so you’d to well to back them up before starting. And don’t forget to drop a line in the comments, saying how are you liking your Galaxy S after the update.

Nokia 900 appears on a promo video, looks the part

November 17th, 2011

We just stumbled upon some footage of a yet unannounced Nokia Windows Phone smartphone. The device that appeared on a promo video created by a Nokia developer is believed to be the Nokia 900 Ace, which leaked right before this year’s Nokia World, but didn’t make an official appearance at the event itself.

The smartphone bears some resemblance to the Symbian-running Nokia 700, but features a much larger screen. According to some speculations, based on comparing the icons sized in this video and in the similar Nokia Lumia 800 promo clip, the WP device you are seeing here has a screen diagonal of at least 4 inches.

Of course, this could turn out to be just a reference picture and not an actual device, so don’t get too excited just yet. However, it would certainly make sense for Nokia to have another interesting WP smartphone to launch at the start of next year. The Lumia couple is certainly nice, but it won’t be able to take the company out of the swamp it has put itself into alone.

Sony Ericsson details the ICS update for the Xperia lineup

November 17th, 2011

Sony Ericsson promised that their 2011 Xperia lineup will be updated to the latest version of Android, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, back in September, but now the company has stepped up to bring some further details about the update.

Sony Ericsson confirmed that the following devices will be getting the Ice Cream Sandwich update:

Xperia arc
Xperia arc S
Xperia PLAY
Xperia neo
Xperia neo V
Xperia mini
Xperia mini pro
Xperia pro
Xperia active
Xperia ray
Live with Walkman
As you can see there are no absentees to the list and the company will really deliver on its promise.

Sony Ericsson also mentioned that its developers are working on merging our current Xperia experience with the new features in Android 4.0, which suggests that they will be bringing their launcher customization to ICS, as well.

Unfortunately, we still don’t have an exact date for the update roll-out start, but hopefully they the Sony Ericsson R&D won’t take much longer than the CyanogenMod Team to finish it.

HTC Zeta image leak, has a 2.5GHz processor and runs ICS

November 17th, 2011

Possible design and specs of an upcoming handset codenamed HTC ‘Zeta’ have been leaked courtesy of Engadget. This phone is supposed to have a 2.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 CPU and 1GB of RAM. Other interesting items on the spec sheet are a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 display and Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed along with Sense UI.

The handset supposedly measures 109.8 x 60.9 x 9.8mm and weighs 146g. Inside you’ll find 32GB of storage space, 8 megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash and 1080p video recording, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, Bluetooth 4.0, Beats Audio and an 1,830mAh battery.

On the outside the device has an interesting pincushion design that is narrow in the middle and widens towards the top and bottom. We can see the earpiece grille right at the top edge along with the camera sensor. What is curious though is the presence of the keys below the display. Since this phone will come with Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed, ideally it should not have any keys. Unless, HTC has decided to go their own way and stick with the keys for now.

On the back we can see the two plastic portions with a metal band running around the middle. The middle portion is significantly raised and then tapers towards the sides. On the top is the loudspeaker, camera lens and flash and near the bottom is the beats logo and a bump for the headphone jack.

As is usually the case with these things this image could be fake but there are enough details in there to prove otherwise. Note the slight mismatched fitting on the top left side of the metal band on the back of the phone. Also, on the side shot on the right, you can see an L-shaped cut showing where the battery cover comes off. And although we were initially thrown off by the lack of volume control buttons on the left side of the phone, we realized that HTC has moved them on to the right side on their recent phones. So for all we know this could probably even be a photograph of the real thing. We should find out for sure soon enough.

Motorola planning to launch 13MP variants of RAZR in China

November 14th, 2011

If you thought the Motorola DROID RAZR launching in the US was awesome, you should get a load of these. Motorola is planning on launching not one but two RAZR devices in China on different carriers and they both pack more impressive hardware than the US and International versions.

First is the XT928 (the one on the left), a slightly thicker version of the DROID RAZR but with one key difference that justifies the added girth, it has a 13 megapixel camera sensor. There is also a Dolby Digital Plus certification mentioned proudly on the back. This model, however, loses the Kevlar back found on the DROID RAZR.

Next is the MT917 (one in the middle), which is made for the TD-SCDMA network and is only thicker by 1mm compared to the DROID RAZR. In this one you get a 4.5-inch, 1280 x 720 LCD, along with the 13 megaqpixel camera. You also get the Kevlar back plating.

No official info regarding the price and availability of the devices but Engadget is reporting that they should be available by the end of the year.

Apple continues to investigate remaining issues in iOS 5.0.1

November 13th, 2011

It has just been a day since Apple released the iOS 5.0.1 update, which among other things, was chiefly aimed at solving the battery life bug in iOS 5 that Apple acknowledged last week.

However, even though a majority of the users are reporting an improvement in battery life (while some saying they never had any issues to begin with) there are a certain number of users who are still complaining about poor battery life post-update. When AllThingsD wrote about this issue, Apple responded to them with the following statement.

“The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”

It’s clear Apple wants to leave no stone unturned and wants to take care of this issue once and for all. You can probably expect another update soon that should take care of the remaining battery life issues on your iOS device, if any.

Verzo launches the Android-based Kinzo smartphone for $459

November 13th, 2011

Verzo, an American company based in Czech Republic, has announced a new Android smartphone, called the Kinzo. With the Kinzo, Verzo is saying that they are not trying to compete with others based on specifications but in terms of design and user experience. And although that might sound like Apple, Verzo says that they are not competing with the iPhone either but rather against certain phones from Sony Ericsson, HTC, Motorola and LG.
So what does this Kinzo have then? First of all it has a very interesting design with angled sides that somehow reminds us a bit of the HTC Touch Diamond. But at 12.3mm and 155g, the phone is quite thick and heavy.

The Kinzo has a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 resolution, TFT LCD. On the back is a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash and a VGA front facing camera. On the inside, the Kinzo runs on a single-core 1GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor with PowerVR SGX 530 graphics, 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM. You also get HSPA, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and A-GPS. Running all of this is a 1,590mAh battery.

The reason for the less than stellar hardware according to Verzo is that they wanted a phone that provided a satisfactory user experience without being overly powerful. Their main focus was great battery life, which they could not have achieved with a more powerful hardware.

On the software side of things, the Verzo Kinzo is running on Android 2.2 Froyo with a customized UI. The reason for the custom UI is because Verzo thinks that Google’s graphical design is flawed and so they decided to make a better one. One of the unique things about the Verzo UI is you can provide suggestions to the company regarding features you would like to see on the phone and if they are feasible without affecting the performance or the battery life of the device then they may be added in future versions. The phone also comes with offline maps and navigation for the entire Europe.

Another thing Verzo has concentrated on is the packaging of the phone. They have a nice looking box with some high quality accessories inside, which includes a leather case and a car holder. This, along with their service, is according to them what sets them apart from the others.

So how much will all of this cost you? Well, if you were expecting a low price then you will be disappointed. The Verzo Kinzo will cost you $459 in the US and €420 in the European markets with free worldwide shipping. The phone has started selling already and can be purchased from Verzo’s website in the source link below.

Apple US starts selling unlocked phones, here are the prices

November 13th, 2011

Great news for everyone who’s been patiently waiting for an unlocked iPhone 4S with no contract attached to it. From today the Apple US store will offer you spanking new, contract-free, factory unlocked iPhone 4S’s.

Prices aren’t that bad either, starting at $649 for the 16GB version. A 32GB iPhone 4S will cost $749, while the 64GB will sell for $849. Before you head up to the Apple store though check what Apple has to say about it.

The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.

In related locksmith news, Sprint started SIM-locking all iPhone 4S handsets purchased from today, November 11 onwards. All devices bought and activated before today’s date will remain unlocked, but how long will this last is still anyone’s guess.

First photo of the LG Nitro HD surfaces, lands at AT&T soon

November 13th, 2011

First official photo of the LG Nitro HD just surfaced. Actually, the device isn’t completely new, as it’s merely the US version of the LG Optimus LTE with a fancy name heading to AT&T some time soon.

As its name suggests, the Nitro HD will sport a 1280×720 pixel 4.5-inch HD-IPS LCD screen. A 1.5GHz dual-core Scorpion processor on a Snapdragon chipset and 1GB of RAM should do the heavy lifting under the hood. The specs get even better with the 8MP camera with LED flash at the back and 4GB memory, which is expandable thanks to the microSD card slot.

The Nitro HD will be launched on AT&T’s new 4G LTE network and will be taking on the Verizon’s upcoming Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound duo. There’s no word on pricing and availability just yet, but we suspect it’s just around the corner as the holiday season is fast approaching and AT&T has no time to waste.

November 2nd, 2011

Remember that there was a third Symbian Belle smartphone that was announced along with the Nokia 700 and 701? If you do, Nokia might have to kill you as the company has obviously pulled the plug on the Nokia 600 and is determined to pretending that it never happened.

Nokia 600 was announced in August and was expected to hit the shelves before Q3 ended, but that obviously never happened. We got no official comment from Nokia about the delay and now it appears that the phone has been cancelled.

All pages dedicated to the Belle-running Nokia 600 are now gone from the Nokia servers and even the Nokia developer website has no mention of it. Videos, featuring the Nokia 600 have been removed from the Nokia YouTube channels and if we hadn’t actually seen the announcement we’d really be inclined to believe that the phone never existed.

We can’t figure out what happened in the past two months that lead to the cancellation of a smartphone that was just weeks away from actually hitting the shelves, but seeing how Nokia handles things we’ll probably never know.

It could be that there were some issues with its mass production or that the Finns want to focus more of your attention to their WP-running Lumia smartphones. Either way, if you had your sight set on the Nokia 600 you’ll need to move along and find another device that suits your needs.

Nokia Lumia 800 to hit the UK on November 16

November 2nd, 2011

The first Nokia Luma 800 shipments were leaving the factories last week, but it’s only now that we learn the actual date of its arrival. The Finns announced that UK residents will get the chance to buy the Lumia 800 on November 16.

Previously, the company set the price of the Lumia 800 at €420, which should translate to about £430 after the UK taxes are added. It may seem pricey, but you shouldn’t forget that this fella comes with free lifetime voice-guided navigation, a gorgeous AMOLED screen and that oh-so-sleek non-colored plastic unibody.

You are welcome to check out Nokia World 2011 live coverage for live photos, camera samples and benchmarks of the Nokia 800 Lumia. After that, feel free to drop us a line in the comments section and say if you consider getting one.

Samsung wants to see the iPhone 4S source code, are they for real?

November 2nd, 2011

At this point it seems like we won’t live long enough to see the end of the legal battle between Samsung and Apple. Still, if you haven’t been bored to death by the whole thing already, hear about the latest development from the Australian court.

Samsung is currently suing Apple in Oz, claiming that the iPhone 4S is infringing on three of its wireless patents. The Korean company’s legal team has now formally requested to see the iPhone 4S source code, along with the agreements Apple has signed with the Australian carriers, so they can assess the potential patent infringements.

Now as you could imagine, Apple won’t be all willing to share the iPhone 4S secrets and it wouldn’t share anything without a court order. We are yet to see how this one pans out, but such orders are usually extremely hard to grant, so unless Samsung has a really strong case, we doubt they have great chances here.

Nokia 800 teaser hits UK’s TV channels one second at a time

October 24th, 2011

With barely three days left until Nokia World kicks off in London, a series of one second long teasers has hit the TV channels in the UK, showcasing some of the design highlights in the upcoming Nokia 800.

The teasers are very much in line with the previously leaked, disco/metro UI themed promo images of the Windows Phone running smartphone. You can see them put together in a single video clip below.

With the press shots of the Nokia 800 out in the wild as well, all we are left to do, is wait for the official announcement in the next few days. Stay tuned.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus designed with bypassing patents in mind

October 20th, 2011

After yesterday’s Ice Cream Sandwich event, Samsung’s president of all things mobile JK Shin made an interesting note about the freshly announced Galaxy Nexus and the ongoing patent attrition warfare with Apple.

Now, Samsung wants to put a stop to all the patent infringement cases with its top smartphones and has taken the first step to do so by designing the Galaxy Nexus from the ground up to avoid being drawn to yet another patent lawsuit.

“Now we will avoid everything we can and take patents very seriously,” said Shin Jong-kyun and later added, “Patents are very complicated and can be difficult to identify, but Samsung tried to ensure that no known patent by Apple is included in the new Android smartphone.”

So does this mean that Samsung admits that in their past products some Apple patents were indeed infringed? And is the Galaxy Nexus now immune from more patent lawsuits being designed from the ground up with this sole purpose?

Samsung’s mobile chief doesn’t even know the answer to that last one, saying “We will see if (the Galaxy Nexus) will be 100 percent free from Apple lawsuits.” We guess only time will tell.

Belle-powered Nokia 603 goes official with a 1GHz CPU and NFC

October 13th, 2011

Nokia introduced a new member of its family of Symbian Belle-running smartphones. The Nokia 603 is a youthful looking, compact smartphone with a 3.5″ ClearBlack LCD with IPS technology and a 1 GHz CPU.

The Nokia 603 screen has nHD resolution (360 x 640 pixels) and 1000 nits brightness, so it’s probably the same unit that we saw on the Nokia 701. The smartphone offers quad-band 2G and tri-band 3G with 14 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA.

As for local connectivity, the Nokia 603 comes complete with GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, FM radio, a 3.5 mm audio jack and NFC. The smartphone has 2GB of on-board storage, which can be expanded by up to 32GB thanks to the microSD card slot.

The Nokia 603 fixed-focus camera with an extended depth of field can capture 5 megapixel still and 720p video. Unfortunately, there’s no front-facing camera so video-chatting with this one will be quite a challenge.

Samsung Galaxy W coming to T-Mobile USA as Exhibit II 4G

October 13th, 2011

T-Mobile USA is readying a replacement for the Samsung Exhibit 4G, which is barely a few months old. It’s called the Exhibit II 4G and is a T-Mobile version of the Samsung Galaxy W (which we have previewed).

The Samsung Exhibit II 4G for T-Mobile drops the hardware home button and goes for four capacitive keys, but other than that it should bring the exact same package.

That includes a 3.7″ WVGA screen, 1.4GHz single-core CPU with 512MB RAM, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a 5MP camera with 720p video capture.

According to the leaked T-Mo roadmap, the Samsung Exhibit II 4G will launch on November 2 for $99 on a two-year contract.

Affordable S40-running Nokia X2-05 and C2-05 announced

October 11th, 2011

Today Nokia unveiled a couple of new entry-level additions to its portfolio of mobile phones. The Nokia X2-05 and Nokia C2-05 are S40-running handsets with QVGA screens that should fit easily in any budget.

The Nokia C2-05 slider offers a 2″ 65K-color LCD, VGA camera and a microSD card slot. FM radio, Bluetooth and microUSB connectivity are also on board the lightweight (98.5g) featurephone. On the network side of things dual-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE is as good at it gets, but at least there are two versions of it for the different parts of the globe.

The Nokia X2-05 is a music-centered bar, packing a really powerful speaker. According to Nokia the perceived loudness of that one is 106 phons. An FM radio with a support for recording and a VGA camera are the other multimedia features of the phone.

At 87.8g, the Nokia X2-05 87.8g is even lighter than the C2-05, despite the larger screen. Much like its sibling though, the X2-05 packs a MicroSD card slot, dual-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth and microUSB port.

Available in Black, Silver, White and Bright Red, the Nokia X2-05 will also ship in Q4 and is expected to cost around €46 before taxes.

Symbian Belle won’t roll out on October 26 after all

October 11th, 2011

It turns out that the previous information on Symbian Belle roll-out is not true. It suggested the Belle update will start seeding to Symbian smartphones around the globe on October 26, the day Nokia World kicks off.

Unfortunately, Yvonne, a Promotions Manager in Nokia’s Software Update Management department rebutted this rumor and said that the update isn’t happening then. Here is the exact quote, as taken from the Nokia official Support forum:

… and I can already tell you that this one is just a rumor & definitely not happening.

As you all know we are NOT announcing any dates for our software updates in advance. Plus: At the moment our focus first is to get Symbian Anna out to our customers in the US, Canada & Australia. Symbian Belle IS coming – but definitely not on 26th October as some blogs are claiming.

So, no Symbian Belle for us this month. Here’s hoping that the initial rumors weren’t too far off the mark and the roll-out will start at the beginning of November.

Hat tip to Boris Petrov, for sending this in.

Dual-core CPUs and LTE coming to Windows Phone in the future

October 10th, 2011

Windows Phone just recently reached a major milestone with the 7.5 update, commonly known as Mango, by adding multitasking and other big improvements to the OS. Check out what we thought of it here. Anyway, now there are two other major milestones in the works too – dual-core CPUs and LTE connectivity.

Andy Lees, head of the Windows Phone division, spoke to AllThingsD giving some detail on Microsoft’s plans for Windows Phone. He thinks they’re in a good position to take the role of the third player in the mobile OS world as an alternative to Android and iOS, with Mango helping to boost sales volumes.

As for dual-core CPUs, those are something that’s being worked on but Lees didn’t give a time frame for when they might make it to market. Current top end WP phones run on 1.5GHz single-core CPUs and Lees thinks they’ll stack up well enough against dual-core smartphones.

Microsoft wanted to wait until the software can make good use of the extra core. Seeing how Windows Phone only recently got multitasking support and not all apps support it yet, it will be a while until the OS is ready for two cores.

The decision not to include 4G for now was made because early generation LTE chipsets are quite power hungry. The technology will be included in future devices, when it’s ready – but again, Lees gave no dates for when that will happen.

Microsoft is already looking forward to the next major update for the OS, but whether there will be a minor update first (like NoDo hit before Mango) hasn’t been decided yet.

Lees also commented on the patent-licensing deal between Microsoft and Samsung, saying that part of the deal includes stronger support for Windows Phone from Samsung. He likened the Samsung deal to the Nokia one, but allowed that it’s “not quite as deep a dependence”.

CyanogenMod 7.1 finally gets released

October 10th, 2011

After a long wait, the CyanogenMod 7.1 has finally been released. Although originally planned to release last weekend but some issues with their automated build system prevented that from happening.

The latest version adds a host of improvements that can be found here and is now supported on 68 devices. Quite a few of these are from Sony Ericsson, something that was possible because the company reached out to CyanogenMod developers and provided them with devices, technical assistance and drivers. Samsung did something similar a while back.

Click here to see if your Android device is supported and then start the download. Support for more devices, such as the HP Touchpad and the LG Optimus 3D will be added soon.

Samsung Galaxy II update to increase the size of icons

October 10th, 2011

Samsung has announced that they will be releasing an update for the popular Galaxy S II smartphone that will increase the size of the on-screen application icons by 30 percent.

UI after update on the left. Current UI on the right.

This means that after the update the homescreen will show just three icons at the bottom and even the application menu grid will be reduced to a 3×3 grid.

While we don’t know the exact reason for this, it’s not hard to imagine what it could be. Currently, Apple is in a legal battle with Samsung for copying the trade dress of the iPhone. After applying this update, the Galaxy S II UI will share very few similarities with the iPhone’s UI, making Apple’s complaint almost a non-issue.

Another change that this update will bring is a System Update widget. It will inform you of the current version of the software and if there are any new updates available.

The update should be available to Galaxy S II owners soon. Hopefully, the icon size change will be optional, as it seems like a waste of good display space that some users might like to keep.

Apple iPhone 4S pre-orders start today, are you getting one?

October 8th, 2011

As promised, the newly announced iPhone 4S has just gone on pre-order in seven countries. You can choose between black and white versions right from the start and between 16, 32 and 64GB of internal storage.

All the online Apple Stores (including the USA’s store) offer the iPhone 4S unlocked and SIM-free. The 16GB model costs $649/€629/£499/A$799, the 32GB one is $749/€739/£599/A$899 and the 64GB goes for $849/€849/£699/A$999.

The US store also offers iPhone 4S on contract with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon at $199(16GB)/$299(32GB)/$399(64GB).

All the pre-orders will ship from October 14th, whilst 2 days earlier Apple will release iOS 5 for the iPhone 3GS/4, the iPad family and the compatible iPod Touches. The unlocked USA iPhone 4S will ship in November though and it is the first time Apple has offered carrier-independent iPhone’s on the US market right from the start.

On October 28th the list of countries offering iPhone 4S availability will grow far larger. The following countries will get the 4S: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Even more countries are joining the list later this year from some time in December.
